This is a silly film. But who cares? The fact that it has cool cover-art and is full of naked ladies waving swords around and rubbing each other with baby oil, is more than enough to please my primitive mind. War Goddess is about a tribe of gorgeous, lesbian lady warriors. Antiopa (played by Alena Johnston) dreams of being named queen of the tribe, so when a tournament where the winner will be crowned is about to be held, Antiopa quickly signs up. The contest consists of fun things like horse riding, archery and topless wrestling (WHY isn’t this an Olympic sport!?!) and Antiopa becomes the favorite to win the throne. But first she has to beat her nemesis, the tanned Oreitheia.
But that’s not all. The amazons hate men, and every year they organize a sort of sex event where dudes are “forced” to have sex with them and make them pregnant. Hey, it’s tradition. But antiopa falls in love with one of the guys. Love is, however, banned in their female dominant society. Aha, so the plot thickens. If you like trashy girl power movies (sure you do) you should definitely check out this film. It’s directed by Terence Young who made three of the best Bond movies in the 60’s; Dr. No, Thunderball and From Russia With Love. War Goddess came out in the mid seventies, a few years after he was done with 007. It’s not nearly as impressive as his Bond films (few things in life are), but it’s full of acton and surprisingly sleazy to be a Young film, which probably has something to do with it being an Italian production.
