Stylish cult sleaze: “EUGENIE… the Story of Her Journey Into Perversion” review

Not everyone is ready for a movie of this class. Smut king Jess Franco’s films are an acquired taste, everyone knows this, but once you get hooked they’re terrific. The plot? Young, naive Eugenie (Swedish babe Marie Liljedahl) goes to spend the weekend on an island paradise with a twisted step-brother/step-sister love-couple (Maria Rohm and Jack Taylor) who are members of a sex cult led by horror legend Christopher Lee, who wants to bang anything with a pulse. Amused and a bit disturbed, Eugenie then takes a psychedelic “journey into perversion” with woman-to-woman fondling and sadomasochism. You know, something fun and something different. Tagline: “Her body is bruised and embraced beyond her wildest dreams…”

The snazzily-titled Eugenie… the Story of Her Journey Into Perversion is based on the Marquis De Sade’s “Philosophy in the Boudoir”. The film lacks the nasty edge of De Sade’s work, but it comes highly recommended to all Eurosleaze fans. In an interview, Jess Franco stated “Of all my films, it’s the one I hate the LEAST.” It’s not to be confused with his other De Sade adaptation ‘Eugenie De Sade’, but it’s definitely my favorite of the two. A major bonus is the groove-alicious score by Bruno Nicolai, and of course, Franco’s films always had gosh-darn beautiful ladies, and he really outdid himself with his discovery of Maria Rohm. Eugenie is a well-made, erotic cult classic with a dream-like style, softcore nudity and interesting surreal visuals, including a deep, powerful scene with Liljedahl stumbling naked through sand dunes, weeping, as the morning sun comes up.
