Forgotten gem of early 70’s exploitation: SUGAR COOKIES review

This unique erotic thriller is about a sleazy film producer who murders an adult film actress (the adorable Lynn Lowry) in a game of sexual Russian roulette and makes it look like suicide. Understandably pissed, her lesbian lover (Mary Woronov) seeks revenge and has lots of dirty sex with the dead girl’s lookalike (Lynn again). Sugar Cookies is written by Lloyd Kaufman (and produced by Oliver Stone!) and it’s definitely one of the best films in Troma’s library and, like Combat Shock, it proves that Troma isn’t just schlock and fun b-movies. This is a very good and well made film. Many sexploitation films from the 1970’s are nearly unwatchable, but this one rocks and the acting is excellent. This is definitely one of Woronov’s best roles, and it’s a mystery to me that although Lynn Lowry starred in great films like Shivers, The Crazies and Cat People she never really became a big movie star. She is amazing! Sugar Cookies (Tagline: “Soft on the inside… hard on the outside”) has a grim tone, nice New York City locations, steamy lesbian sex scenes and a strong, suspenseful script with lots of interesting Hitchcockian plot-twists. All in all, this movie is great fun to watch.
